Generic Levitra

Can I take Levitra with other medicines?

It's important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you're already taking any medicines, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start taking Levitra. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines while you are using Levitra, to make sure that the combination is safe.

Levitra must not be taken with any form of nitrate medication, as this combination can produce a severe drop in blood pressure that can cause dizziness, fainting, or even a heart attack.

Nitrate medications include the following:

  • glyceryl trinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate (used for angina or heart failure - if you experience chest pain after taking Levitra DO NOT use nitrates to treat it)
    nicorandil
  • amyl nitrate (also known as 'poppers').

For similar reasons you should not take Levitra if you are taking a medicine called riociguat.

Don't take Levitra with other treatments for erectile dysfunction, as the safety of such combinations have not been established.

The following medicines may increase the amount of vardenafil in your blood and so could increase the risk of its side effects.

If you're taking one of these you should avoid taking Levitra as well:

  1. protease inhibitors used to treat HIV infection, for example ritonavir and indinavir
  2. the antibiotics erythromycin and clarithromycin
  3. the antifungals itraconazole and ketoconazole.

If you're taking a type of medicine called an alpha-blocker (used for high blood pressure or an enlarged prostate gland), taking Levitra as well may cause a drop in your blood pressure that might make you feel dizzy or faint. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further advice if you're already taking an alpha blocker, such as the following:

  • alfuzosin
  • doxazosin
  • indoramin
  • prazosin
  • tamsulosin
  • terazosin.

You might be more at risk of developing an abnormal heart rhythm if you take Levitra in combination with other medicines that can affect your heartbeat, such as the following:

  • medicines to treat abnormal heart rhythms (anti-arrhythmics), eg amiodarone, procainamide, quinidine, disopyramide, dronedarone
  • certain antidepressants, eg citalopram, escitalopram, clomipramine
  • certain antimalarials, eg quinine, Riamet, mefloquine
  • certain antipsychotics, eg amisulpride, thioridazine, chlorpromazine, sertindole, haloperidol, pimozide, zuclopenthixol, sulpiride
  • arsenic trioxide
  • domperidone
  • fingolimod
  • methadone
  • ranolazine
  • tolterodine.

There are currently no other medicines available in the UK that contain vardenafil as the active ingredient. It's not yet available generically.
